Six people have been killed and 10 others missing after record rainfall caused floods and landslides in parts of Japan's Ishikawa prefecture.

One person has died and several people are missing after record rainfall brought flooding and landslides to coastal Japan, in the same region that was hit by a massive earthquake on New Year’s Day, local authorities said.

TOKYO -- Unprecedented rainfall has left six people dead in Japan's Ishikawa Prefecture, with 10 remaining unaccounted for, local media reported. Two people, one in Noto Town and one in Suzu City, were swept away by a river and their whereabouts remained unknown, according to public broadcaster NHK, citing information from local police.

Heavy rain pounded Japan’s northcentral region of Noto on Saturday which triggered landslides and floods and left one person dead and several missing, officials said.

The Japan Meteorological Agency issued the highest level of heavy rain across several cities in the Ishikawa prefecture, including hard-hit cities Suzu and Wajima on the northern coast of the Noto peninsula.

One person is dead and seven others are missing in Noto Peninsula, state media reported. The region is still recovering from a catastrophic earthquake earlier this year.

The deluges in Japan caused swollen rivers to overflow, flooding homes and stranding some residents in the region.
