Tennessee’s attorney general is calling Memphis’ effort to place a referendum on gun control measures in the city a “futile stunt” that could incur hefty legal fees. However, the office will not file an emergency appeal to stop them.

"This is Memphis's mistake to make and will ultimately be Memphis's mistake to pay for," said Tennessee Attorney General Jonathan Skrmetti.

The state of Tennessee will not challenge the recent ruling that allows the gun referendum on Memphis ballots, according to Tennessee Attorney General Jonathan Skrmetti.

The lawsuit also includes case law from a 2004 Tennessee Supreme Court ruling that found the election commission cannot pull ballot items.

Secretary of State Tre Hargett said Monday that his office would not approve a local gun control measure on Memphians' ballots.

Memphis City Council Chairman JB Smiley Jr. says the gun-control referendum is going to voters in November. Smiley said there has been a lot of discussion between the council, leaders of the Tennessee Legislature and local business leaders on the way to the ballot’s finalization.

Also on the docket this week, the Memphis Police Department will be hosting a hiring expot on Sept. 28 as they look to bring on more officers.
